74% of Tory members now back Heathrow expansion after Brexit vote

  •  Poll shows younger and vote Remain members most supportive of Heathrow expansion in response to Brexit.
  •  88% of members say a decision to expand Heathrow would show the new leader capable of ‘putting the national interest first’
  •  Heathrow was unanimously and unequivocally recommended for expansion after three years of analysis by the independent Airports Commission.

In the first ever poll of their views of airport expansion, and as the UK prepares for Brexit, 74% of Tory Party members now support a third runway at Heathrow.   Expanding Heathrow is now a choice for the next Conservative Party leader and the views of the party membership will influence the airport expansion debate.

Responding to the Transport Secretary’s announcement to hand over a decision on Heathrow expansion to his successor, John Holland-Kaye, the airport’s Chief Executive, said that a third runway must be a part of the Government’s Brexit plan.

 Heathrow announced today the appointment of the Rt Hon, the Lord Blunkett as Chair of the airport’s new Heathrow Skills Taskforce. During his distinguished political career, Lord Blunkett held the Cabinet posts responsible for Education, for Employment and for Work and Pensions and so brings extensive experience that will help ensure Heathrow provides further support at all levels of education, from local primary schools to the place of work, if expansion of the airport takes place.
