Taylor Review ‘cautiously welcomed’
Matthew Taylor’s Review of Modern Working Practice was cautiously welcomed by FSB when it was released this week. Also welcomed was the call for the Government to focus on encouraging self-employed people to plan for the future, reducing the potential that the taxpayer has to pick up additional costs associated with ill health or inadequate retirement saving

Making Tax Digital reforms are a lifeline for small firms
This week the Government made significant changes to the Government’s Making Tax Digital programme. The Treasury announced the current threshold for Mandatory Quarterly Tax reporting will be increased to the VAT threshold of £85,000, meaning the exemption of the smallest firms- FSB’s top priority for reform

Uxbridge BID wins ballot

19th July 2017

The Uxbridge BID will become a reality, after it wins its ballot.
The Uxbridge town centre BID achieved the required majority of businesses voting to be able to establish itself. On a turnout of just under 35%, 125 of 140 businesses voted in favour, representing £20.2m out of £21.7m by rateable value. To win, a BID must achieve a majority on both counts.

The BID aims to deliver over £2.5 million of investment to the area over a five-year period.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has announced yet another delay in the decision to expand Heathrow, blaming the snap General Election.
In October 2016, the government selected a new north-west runway at Heathrow as its preferred scheme for delivering new airport capacity in the south-east.
In February a consultation on a draft Airports National Policy Statement (NPS) was launched, which set out the reasons for this preference, along with the mitigation and compensation measures the government expects Heathrow to put in place if planning permission is to be granted.
Chris Grayling said that the work to analyse the over 70,000 responses to that consultation is progressing well, and continued: “This government is fully committed to realising the benefits that a new north-west runway at Heathrow would bring, in terms of economic growth, boosting jobs and skills, strengthening domestic links and – critically – increasing and developing our international connectivity as we prepare to leave the European Union”, reconfirming Heathrow as the clear Government choice.
However, he added some bad news, saying: “The timing of the election, in particular the need to re-start a Select Committee inquiry into the draft Airports NPS means we now expect to lay any final NPS in Parliament in the first half of 2018, for a vote in the House of Commons.” It had originally been expected in last 2017.
He promised a further update after the summer recess.
A business source commented: “Sir Howard Davies started talking about expanding Heathrow before the date for the EU Referendum was even set. Now there’s a real danger we may leave the EU before we’ve even taken a decision on where to put the runway we desperately need. What must our european friends think of us?”
There was good news on noise. He announced the publication of a Government response to the consultation held earlier this year on a new night flight regime for Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.
The new rules encourage the use of quieter aircraft at all three airports by reducing the amount of noise airports are legally allowed to make, and will give local residents a 5 year guarantee about the level of noise that they will be exposed to.

A couple’s big day is set to be even better after the second Surrey Business Expo took place at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on Wednesday (June 14).

The event, which has changed its name from Guildford Means Business, is organised by Connect Surrey in association with Webster Consultancy.

Surrey Business Expo hosted 120 exhibitors including Companies House, Chessington World of Adventures Resort, Guildford Borough Council and many more.

Free seminars were also held on “How to Open Doors and create more opportunities”, “How to do your own PR”, “How to turn Cold Leads into Sales” and more.

Organisers also held speed networking sessions.

Paul Webster, one of the organisers of the event, said: “We had breakfast with Guildford Borough Council and The University of Surrey giving a talk on how to get through the procurement stage and that was a full house of about 100 people there. We then held five seminars throughout the day and they were all pretty full.

“We had a couple of speed networking sessions and it was a really good expo and we had very good feedback. The visitors enjoyed it and the exhibitors enjoyed it as well.

“A number of exhibitors did prize draws and one of those was by Vines BMW between Guildford and Woking . Heather Boardman from WWF won and the prize was to use a BMW for a weekend.

“She went and said she was getting married soon and they upped it to the use of a 7 series limousine to drive her to and from that – she was over the moon!”
