Surrey DWP update

Employment Figures

The UK has continued to beat its own record-breaking job figures with a new record employment rate of 75.8% and 32.53 million people in work in November, more than ever before. The unemployment rate remained at a joint 43-year low of 4.0%, with the youth unemployment level having almost halved since 2010 and female employment at a near record high of 71.2%.

DWP Visiting

There is now a page on to give customers information about our visiting service, who might be eligible, what to expect and checking the visit is genuine.

Universal Credit

A reminder that from 1 February 2019, any new claims for Universal Credit can be made regardless of the number of children in the household. Previously, claimants with more than 2 children continued to claim tax credits and this is no longer necessary.

Locally the Partnership team are still busy delivering Universal Credit awareness sessions to our various partners. If you think this is something your team or organisation could benefit from, please feel free to get in touch.

Young Womens Trust

Do you work with young women aged 16-30? Young Women’s Trust are an organisation who offer tailored support to women in this age group regardless of whether or not they are in work. Their ‘Work it Out’ service focuses on confidence and employability through coaching and mentoring. This can be accessed by phone or online and is free to use. The support can be personal – mental health/wellbeing etc, or practical help – looking at CV’s, preparing for an interview.

Louise’s story – “I met YWT at the job centre, I was signing on and doing work experience there too. I had an interview – an assessment day with PWC and was really nervous, so the coaching seemed like a good idea. I worked on talking about my skills and abilities, and how to demonstrate them, and got the job. After the interview I was able to utilise the techniques my coach taught me – it was all transferable. It’s helped me be able to talk to my colleagues and peers in the new job. I was self-conscious because they all went to Oxford or Cambridge and I felt I didn’t have as much to offer, but I can talk about my own experiences and skills more clearly and with confidence now.”

What I Love About Spelthorne

What I love about Spelthorne

Over 60 young people aged 5–18 have taken part in a series of creative workshops in preparation for Spelthorne Borough Council’s ‘what I love about Spelthorne’ creative competition, organised by the Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Jean Pinkerton OBE.

The workshops showed the young people how to make their own short films, design and print their own t-shirts, and write and produce music with professional industry teachers – giving them new skills and experience to use in the competition.

‘What I love about Spelthorne’ is open to all young people aged 5 – 18. Tell us what you love about Spelthorne and you could win a day out for the family, gift vouchers and more! Entries can be anything creative such as a piece of 2D art, a film, photograph, display or a song – the limit is your imagination! Tell us about your favourite place in Spelthorne, your favourite things to do or whatever it is that makes your local area special to you.

The Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Jean Pinkerton, said: “I’ve always been really amazed by the creativity of the young people in Spelthorne so as soon as I became Mayor I wanted to launch a competition which would showcase their talents. I know they will be bursting with ideas and I can’t wait to see the entries.”

Send your competition entry to: What I love about Spelthorne, Leisure Services, Spelthorne Borough Council Offices, Knowle Green, Staines-upon Thames, TW18 1XB by Friday 21 September.

Beer, Gin and Music Festival

Sunbury Beer, Gin & Music Festival
Saturday 15th September

Tickets on Sale Now At The Bar and Online
Buy your tickets online here now.

The Event

After the success of last year’s Beer and Music festival it needs little introduction for 2018.  As the new title implies, however, there will be a greater emphasis on gin (and gin cocktails) this time around as it was so popular last year. As before the festival will feature ales, lagers, gins, ciders, wines and Prosecco.

Engraved Beer & Gin Glasses

The entrance tickets will give access to the festival facilities, a choice of an engraved beer or gin glass, and access to the music. Some beers and spirits will again be available from £3:00.  Drinks tokens can be purchased on arrival.

Sponsorship Welcomed

We have flexible sponsorship opportunities to support the event and to entertain friends, customers and employees – see the details below.

The Music Line Up

The music is important as the beer, gin and other offerings available on the day – this is also a music festival.  Three bands will play during the course of the afternoon and evening ensuring it will be another day of varied and always entertaining music to go with the all-day refreshments.

The Hampton Band: 2:00pm*
Led by Chris Allard who has appeared at the Club with his previous band, Venice Red, and as a regular member of The Chain Gang. Expect a classy and eclectic selection of rock standards.

Skeleton Crew: 5:30pm
They opened last year’s festival, featuring Paul King, an original member of Mungo Jerry, Colin Pattenden from Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and currently also with The Nashville Teens. Will be playing their up-front brand of jug band blues and good-time music.

Bad Influence: 9:00pm
Bad Influence are a regular and highly popular Music Night attraction led by the formidable guitarist and singer Val Cowell. Their blues-rock show provides an ideal way to close the festival.
